SHORT PRESENTATION OF THE EXOTARIUM-PROJECT IN TULA/RUSSIA

Tula Exotarium (City of Tula, Russia, 190 Km south of Moscow) 

Tula Exotarium possesses one of the world largest collections of snakes enlisting more than 525 species and sub-species. Many of these snakes are kept only here and one cannot find them anywhere else. Scientists of different Academies of Sciences and Institutes as as well as zoo workers from different countries visit Tula Exotarium frequently to learn the unique animals or methods of their keeping and raising.

Every year Tula Exotarium see the birth of more than 4000 young animals from more than 170 species of reptiles. During the period of its work Tula Exotarium managed to create self-replicating populations in 54 threatened species of reptiles and amphibia. It was the first time in the world practice when Tula Exotarium received the geniture from 48 species of reptiles and amphibia. The exotarium got the international acknowledgement in many countries of the world.

3 species of snakes, new for the science, were described with our participation:

  • Boiga tanahjampeana, Orlov & Ryabov, 2002
  • Boiga bengkuluensis, Orlov, Kudryavtzev, Ryabov, Shumakov, 2003
  • Trimeresurus truongsonensis, Orlov, Ryabov, Thanh, Cuc, 2004.

The exotarium is a founder of the regional collected scientific works "Nature of the Tula region" (together with the reserve museum "Kulikovo Field").

The Tula Exotarium is in the process of developing its next step forward to a bigger international center of Herpetology, combined with a University like, zoological campus. This already designed future project is on its way to be Russias most informative and larges, all year round entertaining zoological hot spot.
